I really love the sound of the K1000's, but they're a tough load for my iPod (

). Regardless of price, is there a pair of portable phones that has a signature even remotely similar to the AKG K1000's? Currently, I use Senn PX100's with my iPod, but while they're comfortable, light and pleasant to listen to, they are not very detailed or revealing.

Please restrict suggestions to phones which may be direct-driven by an iPod Photo and are as small and light as possible.

Yes, I know this is an improbable combination.

The ER4 has a large sound disadvantage compared to the K1000. It's soundstage is very compressed compared to the K1000's huge soundstage.

From my last listening impressions with IEM's, the Shure E4 was my overall favorite. This was comparing to the Shure E5, Ety ER4S, UE Super.Fi 5 Pro, and UE Super.Fi 5 EB.

But to have the speaker like sound magic the K1000 produces, you really can't get there with small headphones, escpecially not with IEM's. The K1000 is goofy for a reason.

HD590s are fairly easy to drive, have a wide soundstage, are rather light for circumaural cans - but as such, they aren't exactly small (though still smaller than 595s or 580/600/650), and whether they have any sonic resemblance to the K1000, I don't know (kinda doubt it). Maybe some closed cans with a wide soundstage sound would fit the bill (K240S/K271S? Ultrasone?). But then we're getting quite far from "open" sound. As Edwood said, spacious sound and small size don't go well together (it's the reflections inside the earcups that create this, in case of the K1000 the ear is also involved).

Improbable, yes. Impossible? No. Check out NeilPeart in action on the streets with a K1000!

First post has a few vids that show that the K1000 portable combo is a Ladykiller!
