Three interesting threads currently going about sound science (though not all in that forum):

24bit vs 16bit: The Myth Exploded
discusses how the noise floor is too low for a difference to be detected by our ears.

An Interesting Take on DBT (Double-Blind Testing) discusses, among other things, that unless positive results can be shown, eg: that people tested can hear some kind of difference between measurably different-sounding components, then negative results are invalid.

Tight Bass Misunderstood?
Though it relates mostly to speakers and subwoofers, the concept is being discussed in terms of portable headphones with separate drivers for the bass.
