Ever since I came to head-fi, I've always wondered if I was enjoying the equipment, or the music.

If you had one piece of music that you loved more than anything else in the world, how much fidelity would you sacrifice in order to hear it?

While I generally rip all my stuff lossless, there are a couple of 128k MP3s in my collection simply because I can't find the songs on CD.

It's actually really frustrating for me to listen to those MP3s because as much as I love the songs, the flaws in the encoding drive me bonkers.

If I can hear every singer and instrument it's fine.

But I have trouble with that even with FLAC and UM1...

I just need it to sound half decent.
I prefer it to sound perfect.
I would rather listen to FM radio, or 192kbs mp3s than no music at all. I do have issues with 128 mp3s though. I haven't run across a song that the only copy of was a 128, .............. yet.

if i really like a band or album, i want it at 320 or lossless.

i'm really digging pink floyd's "dark side of the moon" and "wish you were here" i checked out from the library and really considering to buy em.

telephone. I almost considered 32 kbps. If it's a choice between that and not being able to listen my favorite music, I'll take the 32kbps

I cant vote.... My criteria changes depending on where I'm listening. At home its CD through my deck in the rocking chair. Occasionally I bust out the MP3 hard drive source, purely out of convenience.

Out of a portable flash based player 192 MP3 is adequate when I'm chasing the kids around the park, or groovin' while they're napping in the stroller at the mall.

I have some pretty poor quality bootlegs at 64k, recorded on bad equipment by fans, but theres enough in there for me to be able to appriciate the music.

If I myself do the encoding, I could live on 128k instead of lossless easily. Id rather give up my bitrate before I gave up my albums.

CD/FLAC/Lossless for me, there are many psychoacoustical and emotional as well as sonic elements missing from compressed music.

I don't mind having lower quality bitrate stuff until I buy the album, but once I buy the album, Lossless for me.

Since I share music in yahoo chat rooms, I'm very well acquainted with lo-fi sound. But really what counts is the music, so it doesn't matter. It's better than nothing.

You'd have to compress it down to bleeps and bloops and distort that to get me to not listen. I picked 32 kbps.
