Is it possible to hook up the line level out of a music player such as the iPod to the mic in of a computer sound card and have the music play out of the computer speakers?

Better use a line input on the sound card. Mic input may have a fixed level gain stage which is not desired with line level signal coming out of your ipod.

Don't know about laptops, but sound cards (integrated) generally do offer "line-in". Though usually it's the same port as the mic in and then there is probably some software control whether it is amplified or not.
