I hear that certain sound cards have high cpu usage. Is this true when not using eax? like playing a game in 2 channels without fancy 3d sound.

no, the cpu is taxed when it's forced to emulate 3d stuff

here's my cpu usage for mp3s
biggrin.gif

xp1700+ 512mb ddr winxp pro

winamp5 w/ mad = 2%
foobar = 5%
foobar 24-bit 96kHz = 20%
foobar 24-bit 96kHz skinned = 25%

Those numbers are only because you are upsampling the audio, which takes a lot of CPU time.

Sound cards have varying degrees of CPU useage when used in 3D sound, but without it, I believe most cards have very little, if any CPU load (unless the have emulated directsound drivers, like the RME).

correct, they are 2%-5% alone, as shown
