Curious if the G7 is more for speakers than it would be for my ATH-A990Z. I am looking for a possible upgrade within the $200-300 range if at all possible.

There is no G7, your referring to the X7.
I can't see a good reason for getting the Creative X7.
Get the G6.
Do you need sound card features like headphone surround sound?
Otherwise a Schiit Fulla 3 will do the job.

If you have no need for headphone surround sound, like for FPS gaming, then save cash and just get the Fulla 3.
Technically the Creative G7 has a better DAC chip, but may not really make a practical difference, for your use.
Are you more into music or movies or gaming?
