I just found out that Creative sells software that enables you to use their virtual surround sound technologies without buying a Creative Sound Blaster card:

Now I'm wondering if my motherboard will run the software - I have an Asus Z87-A.

Here it says system requirements for SB X-Fi MB3 for example:
  1. Supported HD-Audio codec and driver

But how can I tell if my motherboard will run the software or not?

Some of that software is OEM, which means they sell the software to the motherboard manufacturers
and then you buy the motherboard, which includes the Creative software.

I personally know zero about Creative selling the software directly to the end user.
Your Realtek ALC892 audio processor is fairly common on motherboards, so I would assume it's a decent chance the Creative add-on software would work.

You would be better off buying a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Z sound card, new $78-$84.
Comes with all the software and chance are at least a little better sound quality, from the sound card.
