I've really gotten into this genre, specifically older stuff like Bill Withers, Aretha Franklin, Hall and Oates, Sam and Dave, etc. Can anybody recommend some music along these lines? I'm relatively young, and this music is before my time, so it's hard finding the good stuff.

Al Green

Percy Sledge

Temptations

I suggest getting a large sampler set and deciding which artists you like best and go from there. For 60's Southern Soul (i.e. not Motown), the best still in print set is this one, it will give you a great cross-section of fantastic songs from the major artists:

For 70s Soul, if you can find a copy of this one, you'll be pretty stoked, it's incredible:

Beg,Scream & Shout is very much worth the cash,I picked up mine at a garage sale last summer for 45 bucks,in mint condish.

'Can You Dig It' box set is $$,but grab it if you can find it.I was forced to pay a near 100% mark up on mine on Ebay back in 2005.

getting very expensive

These would be the things I just keep an eye out for. I was doing this for the Motown 'Hitsville U.S.A' box and did eventually see it for $20.
