Which is better for overall bass and for portability? Also, it will be driven by my Samsung galaxy s3 if that makes a difference?

Depends on your preference.
If you want maximum sub-bass volume, and don't care about any other aspect of the audio, then the XB500 is the best per dollar you're going to get basically.
If you want really good quality high volume sub-bass, but also very decent other aspects of audio, in a much better constructed product, then the HFI 580 is a better purchase.

So durability wise you're saying that the 580's are better? The sound signature that I'm in love with right now is the jvc hafx1x's one
