Can anyone who owns a Sony VAIO Pocket player tell me if it correctly plays back MP3 files with VBR encoding? Info from Sony says it does not handle VBR, but it's unclear whether that refers to the current firmware or older stuff.

Not sure about the old firmware but the new firmware absolutely does. Mine plays back CBR and VBR without a problem. Have tried rates from 192 to 320.
Most encoded EAC/LAME.

Cerith,
Thanks for the quick response.
I've ripped my whole CD collection using EAC into about 25GB of LAME 192 VBRs, and the VAIO Pocket looks like it could be the portable device for me.
