I’m considering buying the Sony ta zh1es, but I’m not sure if it really is an upgrade since I already own the Walkman wm1a and the analog amp ta-a1es.

Isn’t the 2k analog amp probably better than the hybrid amp inside the zh1es?

is the dac on the zh1es even much better than the one inside the Walkman wm1a? The Walkman at least has more DSP effects - which I love.

I’m more interested on the amp differences.

I’m using the Sony mdr z1r.

It not better, it is extremely versatile and very convenient to use. It is excellent DAC combo as do it all unit. Try it, you will love it.
In SQ for easy to drive Sony headphones I didn't notice much difference compare to my TA-FA speaker amp. Hope it helps, ask more, if you have some specific questions.
