Hey y'all,

The CD780's are my comfort cans... not just the feel, but what seems to me to be a very lush midrange and nice soundstage.

Was listening to BT the other night and some sections, the speed... the detail... reminded me of why cans rock. Anyway, I'm wondering if since the 780's were replaced by the xd400 and the sa1000's are supposed to be better than the 400's, if the transitive property holds and they will be a good upgrade. The bass on the CD780's wouldn't be hard to beat, I have to admit.

Assuming I can snag the used 1000's FS @ the moment and get $40 for the cd780's it would be a $45 deal. Thanks.

I know the 780's are older and I couldn't find any direct comparisons by seaching, so I appreciate it.

I have tried the XD400s, the SA1000s, and the AKG 240S. Of the three, I preferred the SA1000s. Still, I've stuck with my CD780s, for my taste and preferences they are the best of that bunch. I am a big CD780 fan. For something as good as the CD780s but different, and for my taste better than the XD400, SA1000, and AKG240S (IMHO), I'd suggest the Grado SR60s, Senn HD580s, or Sony V6s. I have the SR60s, Senn HD580s, Sony V6s, and Sony CD780s. Those other phones (XD400s, the SA1000s, and the AKG 240S) I did not find to be worth adding to my collection.

So I'd say stick with the CD780s, since, like me, you like them a lot, and maybe side-grade to the SR60, HD580 or V6 for variety. The Senn HD555 is worth a good strong look too. I've tried those and I might get a pair of those one day. They're all great phones, and hard to beat, and diminishing returns set in hard and fast once you go above that level. Just my opinion.
