So my phones have just developed this fault. I've read that the problems occur most often at the y-joint. I've also read somewhere that just a refresh of the solder at the y joint may fix the problem.

Sorry I've got my soldering iron ready. However I don't want to damage the plastic housing round the y-joint - how do I remove it without damaging it to make the solder repair? Any idea?

If you are already handy with the soldering iron, I assume you are also comfortable with connectors, screwdrivers and the likes. If so, just replace the entire cable. It is relatively easy and it is worth it. I have just taken them apart, again, because I want to try to install a 3.5mm socket inside them, so I can use detachable cables. So you might want to consider that if you open them up. Th hole for the rubber thing the cables are coming out from is just a little smaller than the 3.5mm socket thread, but it looks doable.
