Anyone have any experience with this player? I doubt it's better than the Rega Planet 2000 but I can also get this at a decent price.

Would it be worth looking into?

I've heard that the Sony XB940 SACD player is of very low quality compared to the ES series. Although I have personal experience with neither the Sony CD player or the Rega, I'd think it's a safer bet to go with the Rega if you can't audition.
