Of course it's made with cheap parts. I expect nothing less from Sony. The truth is I don't care. For 40 bucks there's nothing else that can touch it. Mass market DVD players sound way worse.

When's the last time you listened to one?

Um, SD-3950, anyone remember that gian killer?

The expensive CDP based on Sony PS1 is called Dynavox Dynastation, and yes it's $6000

I would be laughing all the way to my DAC, except I listened to that very same setup mentioned in Stereophile, and the whole system sounded VERY good, so the source couldn't have been that bad, eh?

BTW, I'm looking at my unused PS2 right now. Is this thing supposed to perform any heroic feats? I see it has a toslink output, but it says "optional." I wonder how this thing is as a transport..

Was that a joke? You mean to say that someone spiffed up a PS1 and sold it for $6000?

Look, I'm not saying the AK4309 or NJM2100 are terrible, but they're basic jellybeans from the era and the design in which they're implemented is a standard consumer design that is essentially a datasheet-based basic implementation. It'll give OK performance but nothing particularly outstanding. A substantial amount of japanese-branded CD players from the era (including Sony's acclaimed D-303) used the NJM2100. Spending $500 to upgrade something like this seems unnecessary to me, though. Swap the NJM2100 with something better, though. I don't know what voltage it runs at, though. I'd say try AD8397 and bypass over the rails with something like a 2.2uF cap.
