Sony PCM-D50 as a DAP - A post filled with randomness

That such a massive cop out I can see it in Japan all the way from here...

Cop out.

Despite its normal existence as an intangible meme, Sony's poor excuse has taken physical form at their headquarters in Japan and grown so large I can see it from the other side of the Pacific.

See also, hyperbole.

OK I confused "cop out" with "stake out", which involves "cops" and "out". Well, in a car.
So you're saying that Sony is covering the fact that the pot is mediocre by saying that it is only intended to be used with those two phones... Huh... Well that's something. I guess you could somehow put it that way...

Well yeah.  It has a flaw.  It doesn't affect all 'phones equally so they specifically choose 'phones which it doesn't effect and tell you to bugger off if you plan on using anything different.  They could have fixed the problem, but instead they added a disclaimer to the manual.

I guess that back then (eh... 2007?) when the D50 was just released, the only BA IEM at the time qualified to be used as a monitor would be an ER-4P (or did it get released after the D50... Need info). Even if Sony did know that some people would be using this IEM with the D50, they probably thought that it would not be profitable (yes, there we go, profit) to switch to perfectly perfect volume pots on their D50 units.

I've seen the measurements on those two Sonys listed and take one of single BA Shures over them any day.  OTOH those single BAs aren't stupidly efficient either so it might not of mattered 4 years ago when there were only a few 2 ways and 3 ways were more or less brand new (I think anyway...).  Especially when you factor in that something like that isn't designed overnight and most of the desired specs are finalized before the real work of optimization begins.

On the gripping hand, there are cheaper pots with better balance.  They just don't look as impressive.
