I got a MT899 off a guy that had won it. Apparently he used it for about 30min and then decided that he didn't really need a MD... So he wanted to sell it for $400! I made a $240 offer. A week later he responded and now it's on it's way to me *tiihii*

. I should get it some time this week.

I think the list price on MT899 is $299, right? The list price here in Sweden is about $420, but you can get it for $360 new.

Anyway, $240 for a brand new 899 is pretty good, yeah?

As I have probably said in another thread, I am a sharp man when it comes to PMDPs. I heard a sony once and I didnt like it compared to my 702. It sounded lifeless and stifled in comparison.

My 702 died for some reason but I am tempted to try and get it fixed, so I could compare it to my 831.

I would say it here that the 831 is a great machine sonically. it is very detailed and clear. One thing I have noticed is that it it seemingly getting smoother or it might just be the headphones, but even though the highs are very detailed, open, and extended, it is not harsh or sibilant in any way.

I am enjoying the sound of this unit and I would heartily recommend Sharp over sony for md portables, even though I have never extensively heard sonys. ( I dont like sony anyway

It never felt like a strong candidate to me when I was considering on getting a new MD unit.

And here's why:

a) Not very impressed by it's specs. 3.5mW @ 22ohm (although this doesn't mean it sounds bad, but anyway.. not very impressive numbers)

b) Once again looking at the specs.. Battery life is pretty low compared to other units.

c) No NetMD?

d) Doesn't have any LP functions?

e) Don't like the design, looks pretty cheesy to me. What's with the plastic looking panel in the middle? (with the volume, enter and fast forward buttons). The other buttons right under those look pretty cheap as well. Don't like the remote either, I prefer the round Sony remotes.

f) Way too expensive!

Panasonic has always made good sounding portable cd-players though.. I'm not at all judging this unit, pretty hard when I've never seen/heard one irl. But keeping the specs, design and price in mind, this is not a unit I would spend my money on.

It is very possible that it might sound better then most other MD's.. But I will never know, because I'm not spending $325 on a MR200.

Panasonic SJ-MR250 looks pretty cool though.. Kind of looks like a Sony MZ-N10 clone. still has the same weak output though. The external speaker amp (900mW) is a nice bonus

.

Granted that MR200 is a model from the end of year 2000, therefore pretty old. But there are still much older pmdp's that look much better imo.

d) MDLP sucks

f) cheaper than $240 if you hunt around

The MR220 is a *very* nice unit, from what i've read. The MR250 is good also but no touch pad

Hehe, Oh is that what it is, the touch pad thingy

... Yeah, that's pretty neat I guess.

Why does NetMD suck though? explain this to me.

BTW the Panasonic spec (3.5mW in 22 Ohm ) comes out to practically the same as any Sony (5mW into 16 ohm), when you normalize them to the same impedance (Ohms). Its like 0.1 Mw difference, which I can't imagince is descernible to anyone. If power is an issue, then Sharp is really the only brand you should be even conidering.

Yeah, the MR200 is somewhat dated, but I'm declaring it a classic.

Touch pad
ATRAC H.D.E.S.
Superb sound
Funky remote
Proper two line display with smooth scroll text

I'm happy with it.

Because it limits you to LP2 quality, but with the added inconvenience of having to install OpenMG jukebox or SonicStage. It's like Sony built a bleedin' floodgate around their sink.

Of course, it's just my opinion, but I'd rather have my real time SP transfers, thank you!
