i read that you can send sony back the nw-hd1 and they would upgrade the firmware to play mp3 files. has anyone done this?

I'd doubt it.
As far as I know, this service starts at the 24th of december in Japan.
But the date for other countries, I don't know.
Due to the date and availability, I don't expect anyone to have done this.

This is Japan-only for now. The way they do this is to have delivery people pick up your player, and return it about a week later, it's not an operation the owner can do. I wonder if they might have difficulty doing this outside Japan?

The December 24 date is for the Vaio Pocket software update (which you can just download and install like iPod updates). It's not for the NW-HD1/HD2.

no, 24th of dec, they start this service (updating nw-hd1).
Vaio pocket update is 20th of december, with, as you said, just download and install proceeding.

No, Sony Japan's website says it began on November 30, and lasts until May 31. Please get your facts straight - non-Japanese websites often get their info wrong.

As an example, the webmaster of Vaioethics.com sent his HD1 to Sony on December 6, and got it back 4 days later.

ah, ok. I got my infos only from Sony press releases.
Only but one, which is the date for the vaio update, which is 20th of december, and it's claimed on various Sony websites.
