Sony MDR-R10: Two different looking models?
Aug 2, 2007 at 4:15 AM Post #3 of 10
Hi,

They are the same R10, just a different wood finished. One is glossy while another show more wood grain and both of them are superbly built headphones. The wood finish does not associatd with any version of the R10 (lesser bass or heavier bass). I believe Mulveling's old R10 (glossy finished) and my pair (shown in pics) sound identical.

Here another angle.

I do believe the R10 is currently the most expensive headphone aside from the HE90.

I believe recently one headfi member sold his HE90 for 8100 USD, so the R10 is not so bad really.

LOL - it's still bad.

That's like saying a pair of Wilson $60K speakers aren't bad because VSA VR-11 speakers are $150K

I will say though that the quality in craftsmanship on both the R10 and HE-90 are a treat compared to the ~$1K headphone offerings.

Yes....they have pretty nice build quality. Although, I feel the R10 is much better build than the HE-90. I think the HE90 is much more fragile than the R10. After all the R10 sports magnesium frame while the HE90's headband was made out of a very thin steel plate.

Speaking of build quality, I am a big fan of ATs. Their headphone, especially the W2002 ($850 in 2002) is a pure bargain. They are very luxurious looking headphone. I actually replaced the W2002's driver with L3000's and now I have a pair of very special sounding headphone that look even better.

Agreed - the R10 was more substantial to me as well.
