Lol, those are the same EX1000's I demo'd in January.  Didn't like them for $600-$700.  For $300-$400 that's another story depending on ears and gears.

Cool, did you demo the EX600 as well? how did you think they compared?

Kiteki, sorry if I offended you but I didn't say they were Sony's most hated earphones, I said that I didn't think they were worth their price tag and that I've seen them slapped with negative comments by other people
We all have different tastes so if you are happy with them who am I to say you're wrong :)

Anaxilus, its funny you should say the 1000s are more like $300-$400 because in Japan, they are just under 37,000 yen which is about $450.
That's just under double the 800ST and I think it makes the market more interesting. I'd like to try out the 1000s some time just to see how the 800STs stack up.

P.S. Is it just me or is anyone else puzzled why the guy in the video refers to both earphones as having noise cancellation?

No I didn't.  I made the mistake of thinking the 600s wouldn't be for me if the 1000's weren't.  >.<

I have a set of 600's incoming though but it seems like the 7550 might be what I'm really looking for.  Just to be clear I'm looking for a monitoring backup that plays nice w/ multitudes of gear, not a replacement for my primaries.

Though 16ohms is pretty crap DF with your typical 10 ohms of output.  Sigh, hope the 600 works out.  Or maybe I should just get my 262 up and running.

How is this a typical value?  What has this output impedance?

Prior generations of Headstage Arrows, The DACPort, DACMini, most if not all iBassos, Fiio E9, most iPods are around 7ohms.  Basically a bunch of portable gear.

So, with B&H offering these at $259 and an interest-free option (along with 30 days return no restocking), I figured why not get them and check them against the EX600s? I can choose the one I like and sell/return the other. I don't remember how much better the EX1000 was than the EX600s, and to be honest, I don't think the gap was very much. But the MDR-7550s sound like they may be the perfect compromise, and the price is about in the middle. Why not give them a listen?

anxiously awaiting your impressions :D

By chance, I might just be following kumo-sun's path on the reverse. My wish of having a 'stat on my setup might come true tomorrow. Someone from our local forum posted his SR-001 up for sale :p
A year or two, I was lusting for the Yamaha YH-5M but never had the guts to spend that much. This officially ends my ES5 hunt :D

It should be very interesting to compare the SR-001 and the MDR-7550/EX800ST personally

Heh, for now maybe.  SR-001's don't seem to stay with their owners for too long.  I was certainly considering them when I began but they just faded into the background the more I read up on them.  Should be decent as an open IEM though.  Electrostats are better as headphones since they are actually slower than balanced armatures for IEMs.  If you want that ethereal airy, effortlessness okay but it often comes at a cost to other areas.  Keep us posted.

^Ssshhh... I'm just waiting for more customs reviews :D
SR001 - We have a few colleagues who kept theirs, I'm hoping same thing will happen to mine... and I do hope them hybrid batts will help the SQ of the amp.

Oops, I posted this on the Quick Impression thread:

Been listening to the Baby Stax and MDR-7550 using Vonda Shepard's I Only Want to be with You track from Ally McBeal's OST.
Turns out I want more mids from what 7550's presentation. My modded T50RP is sounding very similar to the 7550 only that 7550 sounds more V-like compared to my T50RP's mids. The Baby Stax gets the mids right for my preference - piano sounds thicker than the 7550.

I wonder if a filterless SM3 will satisfy my mids preference? TIA for any input.
