I went to the store the other day and saw a pair of Sony MDR-7509's for almost $200. What are these? I haven't seen too much discussion on them and are they 3.5x better than the V-6?
Headphone audiophiles are practically the stuff of legend.

I've heard both, and the 7509 is not as good as the V6. For more background, the 7509 is the professional version of the V900. And as a public service reminder, the 7506 is the professional version of the V6, and there should be no audible differences between the normal and professional versions. Note that the V600 is inferior to all of the aforementioned headphones.
This is another public service announcement brought to you in part by Eagle_Driver.
The Sony MDR-7509, as dhwilkin has said, shares the same F'ing weaknesses as its "Studio Style" sibling, the MDR-V900. The midbass is boomy and a bit muddy, with (shockingly) very little real deep bass extension to speak of. (That's what you get when you try to squeeze a 15" subwoofer into a box that's designed for a 10" subwoofer!
) The mids are recessed, making vocals sound muddy and distant. And the treble - tinny and harsh, with little (if any) real "air". And the 7509's earcups - which are very similar to those of the MDR-V900 and the MDR-V600 - contribute to such honky and harsh sound; as mediocre as the 7509/V900's sound really is, the V600 (as dhwilkin has stated) is even F'ing worse.
Eagle_Driver is fed up with this waaaay overpriced crap - and he's going to force-feed Grados on you V900 users.
I thought that the 7506 and the 7509 were released at the same time, which would mean that the 7509 was the 'Pro' version of the V7?
If i'm way off the beaten track, i'll just run and hide, but it seems very unlike Sony to keep their product line running with the same numbers, if it were a pro version of the V900, then wouldn't it be the 7609?
Duncan,
I have to agree with you that the 7509 is not the proversion of the v900. I auditioned it at Mar music...and honestly, It is great pair of headphone. However, It doesn't worth the extra 100 dollars. Sound quality is very similar to the my V6....and probably only a bit better.
I'll third to that... The Sony 750x and the Vx series came out around the same time (throughout the 1980's) before the Vx0 and the Vx00 ones hit the market around the early to mid 90's.... this is just from memory when I visited local audio stores the last 13 years... before then I was too young so can't remember that far...
In Japan you can still buy the pro version of the V7 which is the MDR-CD900ST for around 15,000 to 18,000 yen...
