Sony MDR-1000X

BT5 offers vast improvements in operating ranges, but aside from that, no upgrades in terms of audio.

Incorrect. The long distance transmission mode restricts actual data rates to between 100kbits/sec and 500kbits/sec. The speed quickly drops as you move away as the transmission method bolsters error correction and connection resliiance while data rate takes a back seat. It was designed for sensors and connected devices, ie all your house appliances.

Currently data rates for audio are like 360kbit for SBC, anywhere from 400-700kbit for AptX depending on the quality mode used, and LDAC can take upwards of 900Kbit. If we want to take advantage of something in the future it would be the double data rate, but you can't just tell older profiles to use higher data rates outside of the range of bluetooth 2.x . We would need a whole new profile, and the moment that happens we will probably utilize direct streaming properly and thus not needs higher bit rates. Currently the future looks like this, Android O will have LDAC support giving android a very high quality streaming codec (but for the mean time, only for sony headphones), and it looks like apple is hooking up their Beats headphones with a way to direct stream AAC music. Its...a start. On the one hand direct streaming AAC means no recompression of your music, and on the other hand LDAC throws a whole lot of bandwidth at recompressing ALL audio, movies, youtube, games. Also I believe LDAC is low latency.

It's disabled. When you connect the headphone to cable and power it on the BT led blinks red three times and then stays off. All the other leds and functions stays on. No music control is available.
Don't use it w/o power, the sound is suffering without the DSP. If you prefer with or without NC, it's all a personal preference. I prefer it with NC on, gives it a "tighter" sound.
Can I trouble you with one more request? When wired and turned on, is the headphone Bluetooth connection still discoverable on a cellphone?

Correction: Google Pixel, Nexus 5x/6p does support LDAC and almost any other Oreo phone if the manufacturer supports it. It's a software codec and free since Sony licensed it to Google. But since the update there have been issues with BT connectivity. I experienced that just an hour ago. Fixed it by restarting the BT on the phone and reconnecting my headset. Google is supposedly working on a fix.

It's been a long time since I have had an android device. What does the headphone connection look like on that screen when it is on but not wired? Or when the headphone BT connection is available? thanks.
Really easy and basic, just "connected" and one dot on each side of the BT symbol. Bonus: LDAC working. 96Khz,32bit, 900Kbit = total overkill for the stuff I'm listening to. But the best sound compared to SBC/AAC

FWIW LDAC implementation on the M2 is much, much improved from the OG 1000x. I had both connected to a new Xperia XZ Premium and I had to turn off wifi to even get LDAC on the 1000x working in a half-stable state (this was on best-effort mode, which is presumably 660 kbps). On the M2 there's no need to turn stuff off, I leave it on sound-quality mode (990 kbps) and I only get dropouts whilist standing in a crowded train, obviously surrounded by BT devices.

What is Apple doing with their W1 implementation? From some of the early Beats Studio 3 reviews I have read, people have been impressed with how much range they have. Is that a non-standard BT implementation that only works on Apple devices?

intetesting, very informative posts on last few pages here, thanks for keeping the mood up from just worrying about cracks.

Aptx HD connection doesn't work with One plus 5, sound skips like crazy. Only SBC works. I wish I had known this before buying either the phone or the headphone... Is there a list somewhere of fully compatible phones or has someone actually managed to use Aptx HD with One plus 5?

works normal on my site, might be your headphone or phone in particular. I use the same phone and headphone and it works normal.

Thanks for the info, I'll have to see what tricks I can try to make the Aptx HD connection work.
LDAC transmits even more information and that works just fine with my Sony XZP.

try turning off wifi?
I tried turning off WiFi and resetting the headphone, no change - sound is really garbled with Aptx HD :/
Regular Aptx I can make work, but not Aptx HD.

Thinking of getting a pair of M2, but I have a doubt before.

My ears are big, for example I needed the over ear of momentum 2 and even with them they fitted tight. Is the sony size at least comparable with M2 over ear?

Just got OREO for my phone, I confirm LDAC best quality is unusable with old 1000x, but 660kbps works fine for me, with a few drops here and there. But the quality is way superior to aptX
