We "prosumers" have a LOT of trouble thinking "smaller is better"! But that saying "smaller is better" is certainly the case with the 1995-1998 generation Sony earbuds in the $20~$30 (US) range.

I used to have one of those 13.5mm 837-lookalikes, except it was called the (gasp!) 831. Aside from the 888, those were the sweetest Sony phones I've ever heard. Strange that Sony discontinued it and pushed the 838 here (in thailand).

That pair you described was the MDR-E868. Too bad Sony discontinued that one in favour of those notorious "Groove" earbuds here in the U.S.! My E268LP's (with the sapphire-coated diaphragms, just like those 868's) have a bit too much bass - particularly mid-bass. The highs on my 268s are a bit recessed, as well.

I've got a pair of MDR-A22Ls with Sapphire Evapourated Diaphragms, and I agree... they do sound good

BUT... Don't forget the Diamond Evapourated E484s.....

I did some listening on the EX70s that I bought my sister for Christmas (she was listening on stock earbuds till then, and I felt sorry for her) and I didn't like the sound. The bass was too boomy, and it lacked clarity. It might be good enough for portable use, though. These are unmodded, by the way. And I doubt my sister will let me mod them, afraid that I'll really screw them up...

Yes -- the 888s really don't have much bass. Some disagree with me, but I find the MX-500 to be more balanced than any current Sony earbud. I think they are better than the 888s and cost 1/3 to 1/4 the price.
