Are phones like the EX71/81's acctually IEM's?

Do they seal or are they just earbuds?

Having had both phones in your question and most other IEM's, I would say they are more IEM than earbud. They seal at the very outer edge of the ear much like the UE Superfi series. They dont offer quite the amount of isolation as say they etymotic, or the Shure series. (Which offer less than the ety's). But some would say, myself included that they offer enough isolation while the music is playing so you can keep the volume down but offer a comfort level not found with the type that go far into the ear canal.

Its all about comfort and sound so you can actually use the product. Just like full size speakers in your home its about compromise.
