I finally got my Sony EX-81 canal phones in the mail. I didnt really know what to think when I ordered them, I made a post asking for advice, the only thing I really knew going into the purchase was that I hated my E2C's and if they were like the E2C's that they would be up for sale shortly after them arriving.
I must say, im MORE than pleasantly surprised. I gave them a quick overnight run in with some high volume bassy material yesterday and have been listening to them for hours today... Absolutely no fatigue, no ear pain (using the largest tips) NO MICROPHONICS (my largest complaint of the E2C's). I can now shake my head all I want, breathe as loud as I want and act like a normal person and none of it makes it into my music.
The sound is hard to describe (or maybe im bad at describing sound). It sounds very neutral to me, Im not sure if i was supposed to hear a large difference in frequency response coming from HD600 and HD280's as primary phones, but they kinda sound the same almost. Obviously they dont have the soundstage of the HD600, or the isolation of the HD280, but the general sound is very similar to my ears. I like the bass a lot, theres not too much of it, so I doubt they'd be good basshead buds.
My advanced apologies for not being the best headphone reviewier...
Cliff Notes: No microphonics, very affordable, very detailed and neutral, decent isolation, very comfortable. For what I paid I couldnt ask for any more than what I got. Highly reccomended.
