FWIW, I have a Sony D-242 and it is a load better then my Panasonic SL-SX270. The headphone output is more powerful and cleaner sounding, it actually has a line out, and the mega bass is excellent compared to modern models. I don't use the mega bass, but lets put it this way: The D-242 with the mega bass on mid while driving my HD600s at low volumes sounds quite decent. Not as good as through the line out and the Airhead, but it is the best I have heard from a portable CD player headphone out.

I haven't heard very many players though.

ACK! That looks like a MUCH newer model

. Probably a lot worse.

The D-E226CK is essentially a D-E220 with a "car accessory kit". It has no line-out.

Xevion, your D-242 was one of the EARLY generation ESP (Electronic Skip Protection)-equipped PCDPs. It had 3 seconds of lossy compressed anti-skip - because when that PCDP was manufactured, memory chips used for anti-skip buffers were astronomically expensive back then ($80-$100 for 1MB of DRAM!!
