I've seen a couple of references on Head-Fi to a Sony D-1000 player. (Not D-E1000) I searched for the Sony D-1000 but came up with nothing. Is it for real? Has anyone heard it?

Do you mean the D-EJ1000? If so, yes it exists.

I've never heard of a D-1000 from Sony. I'm guessing someone just forgot to put in the extra letters for the D-EJ1000 (I've got one). The closest to a D-1000 would be the D-10, which may have been available in some markets as the D-100, which was available in the late 80's I believe.

Ahh, a clock radio Discman...

can't say i've ever heard one... but the reviewer seems pretty keen... I wonder if it is based on the D10, but with extra bits bolted on
