I have a Sony DE885 PCDP.. i am wondering why would the PCDP only recharges the sony battery but ignore the other nimh rechargables? is there anyway to force it to recharge the other brand nimh?

It might not be a brand issue, but instead an issue of not charging fully depleted batteries. Try putting in one Sony battery with one of the new batteries, and then see what happens. My guess is that will charge them both up. Then, take out the Sony and put in the other off brand battery. It should charge up and you'll be all set ready to go.
