The manual for A816 specifically says the player will only work with XP and Vista. What's the situation in practice? Does the drag & drop feature work with Windows 2000? How about OS X (Leopard) or Linux (newest kernel)?

As far as I know it just shows up as a drag and drop device (like a USB drive, is it called 'MSC'?).

That's what previous owners have said.

my A815 works great with linux, just mount it and do what you need to. In the manual it said something about having to initialize it with WMP11 or something to play AAC files or something like that but I just use MP3s so it doesn't affect me.

I use the A816 with Linux. Just mount it and transfer files like a usb flash drive.

Use it with 10.5.2 and transfers work flawlessly including AAC.
However, the player reconnects almost immediately after having been ejected.

as long as you don't have the japanese version, you should just be able to drag and drop. unfortuantely if you have the japanese version, you need not only windows but also have to use the sonic stage software

BTW, in the MD era I think Sonic Stage used to be among the worst software I've ever used. Don't know if it's still that bad.
