I know I know, I am going down that bad bad wallet melting path...

I love the 639f sound now, would an amp make it even better?

It's currently driving my Shure E4... with SE530s on the way (my wife would kill me if she saw how much those were lol).

I wish I could like rent an amp to see how it makes it better or worse..

I have no clue where to go or if I even need an amp, or could tell the difference for the most part lol

I can't answer as far as IEMs go, but for HD580s it doesn't come even close to my preferred volume level. It actually puts out less volume than my Sansa Clip (by a good margin) or Ipod Touch G1.

I have the s639 and e500 (and a tomahawk that i've never tried using with this combo of dap & iem). My vol setting tends to be at 15/30 when using the e500s so i've never thought the need to add in the tomahawk. I tend to only use the tomahawk for players with a line-out jack. I didn't really answer your question...
