Sonic Stage is Really P**ssing me Off

Just plugged my NW-E507 in to delete some albums and transfer over some new stuff. Sonic Stage says it can't do it because something about digital rights can't be determined. Huh? I ripped the albums myself using Sonic Stage! I've transferred them onto the player before.

I had actually deleted some albums first to make room, and now the player has only half its capacity, and apparently no way to fill it back up now. Anyone have any suggestions??

SonicStage really irritates a lot of people. I quit using Sony products because of it.

The songs with the Digital Rights problems - are they ripped by you from CD? In that case the only thing I can think of is that you've already used SS to transfer them a few times. I'm not sure of the limit but SS does limit a user from transferring (or burning to CD more than 2 (? can anyone confirm?) times, because it assumes if you do more than that, you must be making illegal copies of songs.

If the DRM songs are from another source - MSN Music, Napster, whatever - they will not work in SS. Songs with WMA-DRM (Windows Media Audio DRM) are locked so they cannot be converted with other programs. Since SonicStage converts everything to ATRAC they just can't do this.

Have you tried drag & drop via MP3FM?

Yup, I ripped 'em from CD. The error message says, "These tracks cannot be transferred", and then, "Cannot load the rights information for the selected tracks"..after which the tracks from the CD are listed.

Seems kind of ludicrous that a 1GB player should have a limit on transfers, since most people would probably move music on and off as they desire. But you may be right about the limit. Unbelievable.

i had the same problem with my hd3 when i updated my version of sonicstage. i solved it by formatting or initializing my player. you should be able to do this through sonicstage. it should say how through the help menu. good luck.

Well, initializing the player did nothing, so I'm going with mp3FM for now - thanks for the post. mp3FM doesn't transfer ATRAC files though, and one of the little perks I've come to appreciate from Sony is gapless playback.

. I'm not a happy camper, nor do I have the time or inclination to spend a bunch of time troubleshooting the stupid thing. It's just as easy to toss the little vile - oops - vial of music in the drawer and plug my Shures into iPod mini or nano.

I have been adding and subtracting songs from my NW-E507 for months with no problems. Are you using SS version 3.2? Also, there is a Vaio drag and drop application. However, I think you still need to have Sonicstage installed. Using the following links for more specific ATRAC (i.e. SonicStage issues):

What were all the steps involved in this scenario?

Was SS upgraded?

If so,

a) the previously imported material may be lost. You can see the tracks listed on SS but you won't be able to do a thing with them.

b) what happens when a new CD is newly imported into SS? Can these tracks be exported?

OK. I believe my problem was twofold, and I appear to have the solutions (so far, so good).

Problem one - Wouldn't copy songs onto the player -- pretty certain it was because the tracks were encoded with earlier SS version that wouldn't allow copy protection to be turned off. Now have 3.2 loaded, have tossed out all the B.S. copy-protected trash files, and will re-rip without the odious, virus-like vile slime drm.

Problem two - Couldn't connect to Sony Connect -- appears to be conflict with Norton Internet Security firewall. Turned Norton's off, restarted and was able to make the connection. Did not originally suspect this, as Norton's has no such squeezing effect on any of my other Internet programs/connections.

Re-ripping some stuf now with the 3.2 upgrade and will try to load the player again...

I don't recall having to re-rip everything. But then I ripped all my cd's directly into Sonice Stage 3.0
