thats a good question  - 
to me, that combo just had an edge (and it should've) in breadth of dynamic range and dimensionality,
plus sound-staging. I've heard em - but never directly compared it to my MS...

No headphone in particular. I'm planning to use multiple headphones with it (i.e. K550, MDR-1R, CAL + ~5 more that will join my collection soon)

So for a desktop rig you can consider Aune T1 or X1 (depends on headphone)

I really don't think it will be vastly superior... What are your headphones?

K550 has a really interesting synergy with the mS; given how they are independent of each other, I would have suspected that the combo would be noticeably bass light, but it was surprisingly full and punchy.

Yeah I heard the combo at the LA meet up last year and I was really impressed; if I didn't have my Beyer DT770 LEs I would probably buy a pair, but can't justify two closed full size bright cans with big soundstage...and I do enjoy my LEs ^_^

Anyone tried the ms with the new Philips Fidelio L2? I expect delivery the coming week. I understand that they have not been released in the US yet.

Yeah, I know, I was one of the firsts that recommended the K550 with the MS

Just back from CES...
didn't have energy to goto my office so I set up the MS ahead of the Schiit Vali - 
fantastic!
 
I'm using it w/ my Audeze LCD-XC's.
 
Wonderfully engaging mids, dynamic low-end and lower midrange, and extended highs.
I've been happy listening to everything from Martin Sexton to Aphex Twin!!
 
This is a combo I'm glad I tried!

Currently I have microStreamer and Mad Dog, but I'm thinking about throwing in Vali in the mix if it could benefit the MD...
