well, maybe it wasn't that compelling/drastic, but the one song that got me interested and made me investigate more was a punk/hardcore song "No More" from Youth of Today. It was the straight-edge variety of hardcore, and I was already wrapped up into that whole lifestyle and not using alcohol or drugs, so this was the next step in treating myself/other things right.

Meat eating, flesh eating, think about it
so callous to this crime we commit
always stuffing our face with no sympathy
what a selfish, hardened society so
No More
just looking out for myself
when the price paid is the life of something else,
No More
i won't participate
we've got the power we've got the might
to take whatever is in sight
not even worried, it's an unfair fight
well we've got a heart to tell us what's right
our numbers are doubling in 88
cause the people are starting to educate
themselves their friends and their families
and we'll have a more conscious society

Talks about grapes, crying tears of water, and honey; that’s what turned me over!

On a prehaps less serious note, I recall a NOFX song called "Clams have feelings too." Um. Its a funny song, although, NOFX is not exactly known for sXe...

It wasn't exactly the thing that MADE me vegetarian, but here is an obvious one for this category, and one that I was kinda into vaguely around the time I went veggie..

The Smiths - Meat is Murder:
-----------------

Heifer whines could be human cries
Closer comes the screaming knife
This beautiful creature must die
This beautiful creature must die
A death for no reason
And death for no reason is MURDER

And the flesh you so fancifully fry
Is not succulent, tasty or kind
It's death for no reason
And death for no reason is MURDER
And the calf that you carve with a smile
Is MURDER
And the turkey you festively slice
Is MURDER
Do you know how animals die ?

Kitchen aromas aren't very homely
It's not "comforting", cheery or kind
It's sizzling blood and the unholy stench
Of MURDER

It's not "natural", "normal" or kind
The flesh you so fancifully fry
The meat in your mouth
As you savour the flavour
Of MURDER

NO, NO, NO, IT'S MURDER
NO, NO, NO, IT'S MURDER
Oh ... and who hears when animals cry ?

I was a cattle-rancher from Montana for 37 years. Many's the evening I'd come home from roundin'-up-doggies and slaughter me a steer just for the abnormal excitement of it all (and the pritty ochre hues).

Then I heard this song on the radio and it changed my general outlook:

The Beach Boys - Vegetables

I'm gonna be round my vegetables
I'm gonna chow down my vegetables
I love you most of all
My favorite vege-table

If you brought a big brown bag of them home
I'd jump up and down and hope you'd toss me a carrot

I'm gonna keep well my vegetables
Cart off and sell my vegetables
I love you most of all
My favorite vege-table
Oh oh taba vega vegel

I tried to kick the ball but my tenny flew right off
I'm red as a beet 'cause I'm so embarassed

Oh oh dum do dum de dooby do
Oh oh dum do dum de dooby do
Oh oh dum do dum de dooby do
oh yeah
Oh badumday oh dum do dum de dooby do
Oh badumday oh dum do dum de dooby do

Chomp chomp chomp chomp do-do-do do-do-do
Bop bop bop bop do-do-do do-do-do

I know that you'll feel better
When you send us in
Your letter an'
Tell us the name of your
Your favorite vege-table

I know that you'll feel better
When you send us in
Your letter an'
Tell us the name of your
Your favorite vege-table

Needless to say, I'm now an organic greengrocer and practicing Buddhist.

Bob Marley- We and Dem

I heard an old audio tape of Bob's working version of this song from Roger Steffens, and it really made me think...

"But it the beginning, Jah created everything
He gave Man dominion over all things
But now it's too late, you see Men have lost their faith
Eating up all the flesh from off the Earth"
