It's not a subset. The timing and signal polarity is different. There are several standards that are used with different DAC's
Left Justified
Right Justified
I2S
pulsed word clock

just to name a few. The MCLK is sometimes included and sometimes not, and it can be 128 fs or 256 fs.

The interface must be tailored for each one.
