I think he means having the drivers flat against the ears instead of spread out...

I do this for rock, hip-hop etc. Works very well.

I keep them spread out most of the time. When I lie down and put my head on the pillow with the K1000 opened up, there is some sort of "pillow effect" which enhances the bass and midrange body.

Try it...

I put ankle socks over my K1000s to prevent dirt/dust from getting in
I also put sound reflectors connecting to each earspeaker(right behind it)
Sometimes I put a hood on, to reverb the sound

O = head
/ \ next to head are the K1000 earspeakers positioned perpendicular to ear canal

\ / are used to reflect the sound back creating a unique soundstage that I absolutely love

Admit it: who here wears the K1000 inside an 1850 diving bell helmet for a more "immersive" soundstage?

The closer they are to the ears, the stronger the bass.
Also, for rock music K1000 can sound hollow, so the closed position helps.
Jon L went as far as removing the orange bars and replacing them with a steel wire. He turns K1000 into an supraaural headphone.
I admit his wire-mod is better for rock, but not good for classical or jazz.
