I've got a Benchmark DAC1 on the way as well as a Mapletree Ear+ Purist HD2.

I feel like I'm partially covered on the tube side, but feel weak on the SS side.

What sub-$1,000 solid state headphone amp clearly beats the DAC1's amp section?

I didn't like the sound of my DAC1 with AKG K701s. This is not to say that the DAC1 amp is poor - in fact it is very good (sounds great with Grado SR60s) - but it just seems to lack synergy with the K701s. I have ordered a HeadAmp GS-1 which is an excellent sub-$1000 amp that matches very well with K701s (and probably with quite a few other cans). I would expect it to out-perform the DAC1's own amp.

I have never heard the PS Audio Gaincell HA, so take this for what it is worth, but I have listened to the Gaincell integrateds. They were amazing, and I'd take a long look at the PS HA if I wanted a top-flight SS amp.

I listened to the 701s on the DAC1 amp & the GS-1..GS-1 was much better IMO..& mates very well with the 701s..
