The cables are coloured! The right channel cables are red and copper, the left channel; green and copper. Now I want to know which is plus and minus?

My turn to ask a question.
If I were to recable them balanced.
What would be the positive, what would be the negative and do I need to solder ground somewhere?

For headphone cables, this is the typical pin arrangement:
Signal wires go to pin 2
Ground wires go to pin 3

I believe the small pin should be positive (hot) and the thicker pin negative (cold). I have two TRS plugs in the opposite end. I connected the red/green wires to tip (positive) and the other wires to ring (negative). The sleeve (ground) isn't connected to anything.

For XLR, look at the pics in the wikipedia XLR-article.

Check the connections with a DMM or something when you are done.
