I realize this is probably not the most appropriate forum for discussing audio encoding formats on pc's, however I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I've recently started using Nero's .m4a compression format which I believe is based on AAC. However, I have noticed that quality suffers unexpectly compared to .mp3 files, even though the bitrate is sufficient. I believe this mishandling of the audio on the part of the encoder, which is confusing given that mp4 is supposed to be superior to mp3 for quality.

AAC is a good format and I'm not sure why you're having trouble with it. You might want to double check you're sample rate (should be 44.1 for CDs) and make sure that you have error correction turned on.

You could always download iTunes for free and try their AAC encoder. I've had very good results with iTunes at 320k AAC.

I'd second iTunes. A very good AAC encoder with a terrific interface. Plus apple lossless if you want true lossless files.

I noticed a discernable difference in sound quality from window media player.
