So I've been stuck in this "almost want to upgrade" mode for a year now

It's like a blessing and a curse. On the one hand I've actually made money off headphones over the last year, as I've not bought any and I sold off my SR60i's.

Its like this case of being 99% satisfied, but every now and again I get the itch to move up, just a little. My current rig is a Hot Audio DAC to a Nady 64 band rack EQ, to a Millett SSHM hybrid amp, to AD700's. The Nady adequately solves all the bass issues that the AD700's have and they're quite balanced after EQing.

But I've come really close to pulling the trigger on HD580's, HD600's, AD900's or SR225's a few times.

I guess I should just quit looking at this site, but its some sort of weird addiction. I almost feel kind of like one of those guys who "just likes to watch." Haha.

Anybody have a similar experience? I dont necessarily think my setup is "endgame" level. But I'm generally satisfied enough. Yet there is always this slight itch.

I haven't even used my upgraded equipment yet (besides the uDAC) and I'm still on here all the time reading about impressions and recommendations. I'm tempted to get an HD555 and pull the foam out for a cheap and good-sounding gaming phone. But I just blew $600 on mostly unused equipment, so...

So yes, similar experience. I'd run if I were you. It's too late for me. Save yourself.

I mean I'm not that scared. I've been here on and off for over a year now. I have worked in pro-audio, so I'm pretty immune to most of what "audiophiles" have to claim.

I'm kinda in the same boat here...

I got an ibasso d10 with hfi780's. Both are un-mod'ed. I have been stirring over upgrading both of these via mod's... re-cable from alo and topkit from hiflight. I am just having difficulty pulling the trigger.

From what I have heard, both upgrades would be substantial, but all the talk recently (especially about the T1) makes me hesitant.

The topkit is a no-brainer if I intend on keeping what I got given it's cost. That's the whole thing though... being that I believe my amp wouldn't be sufficient to drive the T1's do I really want to upgrade it?

Basically, yes, I feel your pain.

There's one thing to remember though... It's never going to be perfect for everything. All these phones everyone is raving about have their niches. Some bigger than others.

I just bought a DT990 Pro and now I want an HD650 or HD600. And I haven't even gotten my amp yet.

I like the DT990 (I have the 250ohms version), but it's mids are more recessed than I'd like. I'm hoping a tube amp will help with that a little, as well as taming some of the sibilance (which isn't that bad, honestly). Vocals really sit back in the mix more with these. It has nice highs and great bass, the mids being a little too recessed for my taste is really the only thing that bother me about it.

It's been getting a lot of us with my PS3 -> Astro Mixamp -> DT990 Pro, and it just sounds wonderful for gaming. Great impact and immersion. Once I get my amp in, I'll see if I really want to try the HD600 or 650, for music.

It happens to all of us but if you want to save money go straight to the top end.

i think if i went straight to the hd800 or higher, id still wonder what other lower end sounded like. so im happy that in the last 6 months or so i got to audition a lot of used headphones and a few new ones. i got to see what the hype is about in some cases and decided whether i like them or not. im waiting for my T1 and i was hoping to be able to sell all my other full size headphones, but we'll have to see how the T1 are. so i suppose for some going straight to top end saves, but for someone like me who is always wondering and reading, it wouldnt have helped.

I thought I was going for a "top end" when I got k702 and I thought I'll never spend more than that on headphones. WRONG. Great headphones sound so darn good and so addictive and there is always a higher end or a different high end.

I guess even if I get the HD800 right now I'll be thinking of getting other stuff in a few months. There is no help.

We seem to have an identical experience..
haha.

Personally, I know that there will always be a better can than the k70x, like the hd800.
but it is way way way out of my budget, and I really "do not wish" for myself to spend that much money.
So i decided to "escape", by altering my audio route to balanced.
Going to diy my k701 to balanced k701, and get a budget LD balanced amp and really call it a day haha..
but yeah, wonder if balanced k701 + ld mk vii+ will meet my expectation for me to call it a day hehe..

Dude, I've been around here long enough to know it still doesn't stop there. Let's say you get to the HD800 or T1 or RS1, etc. Then you start wondering about various amps and DACs, since things are a lot less clear as to what the top end is there. You start wondering about synergy with different combos. Then you start wondering if all those people who talk about electrostats are really right and you want a stax or K1000 rig. Then you start wondering about the R10.

It never ends. That's the defining aspect of being an audiophile more than anything else.

The term "Audiophile" is getting complicated... hehe.

Totally agreed..
Its naive(haha) for many to think that just by targeting the highest end, it would be the end. Like after targeting the jh13, some continue and went to get ue18 etc.
what about hd800 ?
They went to get commercialised cables, which are like so damn ex =,=

The k70x is a great pit stop.. hopefully can last a long way

yeah. I am kind of lucky that I have worked in a bunch of different studios/venues and got to try out a number of different things without having to buy them. I also know a lot of people with nice headphone rigs. So, for instance I was able to try out the K701 and realize that it wasn't my cup of tea early on.

As far as upgrading cables, etc goes I personally have the philosophy that if you can't tell the difference in a double blind test, there isn't a difference. But that's my personal philosophy and I dont want to start any wars around here.
