i've been listening to the album Stalker, an ambient album inspired by the Tarkovsky film. loved the film, and i love the eerie/desolate feel that this album has. i'm looking for other ambient/electronica albums like this, or that evoke similar emotions. i daresay i'm looking for something...scary, even, if it's possible, but i have such a hard time finding good electronica recommendations, so i suppose if there's other relatively recent electronica albums that are somewhat similar to this at all (somber, slow paced, etc), i'm interested in those as well. i've been meaning to bolster my electronica collection recently, but this one has me stumped.

Stalker is a gem in the world of 'dark ambient', a genre that is frankly characterized by clichéd dungeon sounds and low-freq sweeps. Both artists who made that work have a good body of solo work that you should check out if you haven't already. Brian 'Lustmord' Williams makes very dark and menacing ambient; Robert Rich makes everything from bright, melodic pastoral tunes to pretty dark spacey soundscapes. Anything by Lustmord would probably fit your description...as well, check out Robert Rich's 'Illumination', 'Somnium', 'Below Zero', and maybe 'Calling Down the Sky'.

For some very ominous music that consists of minimal electronics combined with classical snippets, check out Murcof. 'Cosmos' is pretty new and is one of my favorites of 2007.

Ionosphere makes some very good spacey dark ambient as well.

A good starting point is Cold Meat Industry; this label is a virtual who's-who of dark ambient.

Over the past year my taste in electronica, ambient, and world music has grown a lot. I have not heard the album you named but I'll list some of my favorite groups / album for you to check out that I feel are pretty dark sounding at times and slow paced. Definitely thought provoking.

Little Dragon - Little Dragon
Elsiane - Hybrid
Amethystium - Emblem (Selected Pieces)
Au4 - On: Audio
Alphawezen - Comme Vous Voulez

Hey, Anomaly, thanks for mentioning "Stalker". I just listened to some samples and I think I'm going to buy it.

As far as suggestions go, try Klaus Schulze. I think he's pretty well known, but I'm not that into ambient stuff.

Klaus Schulze is more Berliner School and sequencer music than ambient...maybe you're thinking of Klaus Wiese?

I was able to find the "Stalker" album on Amazon.com. At the bottom where they list what others have bought, there was a lot from a guy called "Lustmord". Additionally, I did a search for Lustmord here at head-fi and found a surprisingly large number of threads about dark, ambient electronica. So... once again, search is your friend

Also, X2(or is it 2X?) for "Cold Meat Industry".

An important album that I forgot to mention is:

Ionosphere - The Stellar Winds

Also, try some of Steve Roach's pure ambient works (Darkest Before Dawn, Mystic Chords & Sacred Spaces, The Magnificent Void, Dreamtime Return).

You may want to check out some of the streams from DI.FM and Protonradio.com. DI has an ambient / chillout channel that plays some darker things sometimes. Generally pretty cool stuff to listen to. Protonradio is hit and miss, but you may like it as well. It's kind of a class of it's own.

If you like the darker side of electronica with trippy synths, Psy-Goa may be for you. May I recommend no other than Infected Mushroom, these guys are sick. Definitely check out their earlier works first. They have transitioned to other styles over the years that may give you a bad first impression.

DNB (Drum and Bass) has a pretty dark feel to it most of the time, especially the stuff streamed from bassdrive.com. These guys have provided quality DNB for many years and I visit this site often to get my fix.

Now, the next recommendation is a bit OT in regards to the OP, but for excellent Trance I recommend listening to the Deep Blue Radio Show. The main host, Solarstone, has been in the "scene" since nearly the beginning and really knows quality work. Agneli and Nelson co-host every other week and throw one hell of a session as well. Best of all, all of their shows can be downloaded for free from various sites.

I hope this post was helpful!
