I don't have the Performer 8, but generally we make sure the earhooks are facing the same direction on both the L and R earpiece. Or sometimes the cable terminal has a dot (make sure they face the same direction in that case, both forwards or both backwards).

If in doubt, you can use a video link such as this to check that you are in the correct polarity:


If something is out of phase, the music sounds weird like it is coming from behind the ears. If it is out of phase, just reverse the cable on ONE side and you will be back in phase.

There's usually a hook shaped curve to it, the curve points to the back to hook over your ear.
