So I am thinking some Senns are in order.

I think I want to try some Senns. At a recent meet I was able to try a few different models, but was not able to spend a great deal of time with any of them. I was to busy listening to other things.

Anyway I need suggestions on which ones to get. My budget is probably between $200-$300. With that being said, if the 650 are what you suggest I can go higher to get them if need be. But after looking at the FS forum I think I can get them for this range. I will be powering them with a Microamp and soon to be aquired X-can v2. Also I will be using either my Ipod, one of three PCDP or computer. I listen to mainly rock, metal, electronic, blues, jazz and hip-hop.

What do you suggest. 595s, 580s, 600s, 650s, something else. Also if you really think that I need an aftermarket cable then say so. That will be outside of this budget and a later purchase.

I'd say go with the 600s. The X Can V2 will drive them just fine. However, I think the 595s would be better for rock and metal, but I think overall you'd like the 600s better. After all, you'll have those nice HF-1s to rock out with. And for some reason, I think the 600s would be better for you than the 650s. They may be better for rock than the 650s. As always, a matter of taste.
(I sure wish I had known you had the microamp at the meet. I would have loved to have heard it. I suppose I need to pm you about this.)

When I had the xcan v2.0 I really liked it with the hd600's BUT having said that there are so many permutation available.

When I got the 650's I had sold my xcan by then. But you can tube roll it and there are a few who have modded the xcan.

utarch00,
I can highly recommend the hd580's with the micro. I also have the 600's, but to be honest, when I put the 600 grills on the 580's I can't tell the difference in sound.
When you order replacement drivers from Senn., they are exactally the same part # for both the 580/600's. Besides looks, the only real difference are the grills and material the headband is made from.
You can get 600 grills for $7.93 each if you feel you need them.
When I called Senn to order the grills and 650 cable, I talked to the head(no pun intended) tech, he said he'd be happy to sell me the cable, but it wouldn't make any sonic difference to the human ear. They have the cable for under $12.00. I'm still debating on that.

kramer5150,
What difference do you hear with the 650 cable?

By the way, you can get the 580's between 138 and 160 dollars.

Sometimes I'm not sure so sure that the HD650 is necessarily BETTER than the HD600 so much as a different flavor. Can you spend a decent chunk of time with both?

I do not know that I can spend time with both. I know I can find some 595s and 650s from one local headfier and 600s from another, but getting them to allow me to borrow them is a different story.

I've owned the 600s, 595, & now 650s. I really wish I had my 600s to try on my current system, but anyway I prefer both the 600s in my old set up, & 650s in my current set up to the 595.

I listen to a lot of rock/metal, as well as jazz/fusion, & classical. While I think the mids/vocals on the 595s are really nice, they don't have the overall refinement, nor resolution of the big brothers to these ears. I think both the 600s, & 650s are damn fine all around cans. So I vote either of those. However I am also curious to try the bargain 580 with 600 screens myself some day.

I would try the Senn 600's. I prefer them to the 650s. But it's a matter of preference - not ones better than the other overall. They both do different things well.

Keep in mind that you'll make huge gains with the Cardas cable when you consider your budget.
