I have not found anyone with even a 50% overlap in my music taste - so this is a SETI-scale search for a human being with a similarly eclectic taste. Even if you don't have similar taste, I am sure you will find something you will like from the artists I have listed. If you want to talk music, I'd love to chat.

My library and taste in music has swollen to encompass 20k+ songs.

I listen to all sorts of metal (Defeated Sanity, Putridity, Wormed, Dim Mak, Disma, Meshuggah, Magrudergrind, Ion Dissonance, Septic Flesh, Deathspell Omega, Blut Aus Nord, Aosoth, Oranssi Pazuzu)

Post-rock/Post-metal (ISIS, Intronaut, Baroness, Mastodon, LITE, Toe, Khoma, Rosetta, Cult of Luna, Jakob)

Progressive/Alternative stuff (Circa Survive, Tool, Genghis Tron)

Stoner rock/doom (Electric Wizard, YOB, Acid King, Atomic Bitchwax)

A whole load of electronic stuff (Venetian Snares, Igorrr, Massive Attack, Hive, Gatekeeper)

Raster-noton/glitch electronic art (Ryoji Ikeda, Alva Noto, Byetone, Kangding Ray)

Ambient (Four Tet, Helios, Gas, Loscil, Saycet, Pantha Du Prince, Tim Hecker)

Instrumental stuff (Guthrie Govan, Secret Chiefs, Earth, Jean Baudin)

Jazz (Ben Monder, Hidden Orchestra, Mouse on the Keys, Miles Davis, Triosk, Todd Sickafoose, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald)

Classical (Ludovico Einaudi, Rachmaninov, Les Fragments de la Nuit, Goldmund, Hauschka)

Folk (Sigur Ros, Rome, Marissa Nadler, Vali, Tenhi, Agalloch)

Hip Hop (DELS, Death Grips, P.O.S., Freestyle Fellowship, Organized Konfusion, Jedi Mind Tricks, Sole)

more mainstream stuff (Andrew Bird, Bjork, Glasser, Fink, The Black Keys, Jonsi, Little Dragon, The Jezabels, Jeff Buckley)

I think we have a common ground (which is pretty much a little bit of everything) lol

Actually, to be honest, I only know a few artists that you have listed, but I listen to pretty much everything too. I started off with a RnB base, but after learning the guitar, my musical taste has expanded pretty wide.

At least I think its pretty wide.. haha

That's cool. Yeah I expanded my music taste a hell of a lot after I started playing guitar too haha.

But yeah I am trying to find someone who has gone both wide and deep, because I want to find moaaaaaaarrrr great music. There is this great death metal forum where I get recommendations for all sorts of music...but it would be cool to meet people through other channels too.

On that note, you should check out some of the artists I listed, at least in genres that you fancy. You might find something you like :p

For Post-rock, I listen to Mogwai, God is an astronaut, and El Ten Eleven mainly. Try giving those a listen if you don't know them

My EDM is prolly the mainstream stuff, Kaskade, Tiesto etc

For folk you should try kings of convience, alexi murdoch (I started playing the acoustic, so these were the artists I liked the most lol)

And for hip hop (not talking about like 2pac and biggie) I really like Nujabes

There's not much overlap with my tastes, I must say: I own things by a few of the performers you list, but Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Tim Buckley, Miles Davis, Andrew Bird and Bjork would be pretty ubiquitous in the collections of people on these boards. A lot of the other artists do seem, from my limited knowledge, to be pretty obscure niche performers. Also, I'm not sure that Einaudi counts as classical or Sigor Ros as folk.
Moreover, Goldmund and Helios are the same guy, so I have to guess you have some overlap with his taste!

Overall, I'd have thought that your taste does represent a recognisable "type", because people who have a dominant taste in metal do seem to stretch out in the directions that you are taking as their taste becomes more catholic. The stereotype of a metalhead is that they can't listen to anything that isn't in common time with drums & guitar, but that certainly wouldn't be true of the metalheads around here.

I like about half of the stuff you've mentioned.  I'll list my favorite artist in each category you mentioned, and then recommend one I love in that category that you haven't listed (not necessarily similar to them).

Metal (Ion Dissonance) - Nonexist

Post-rock/Post-metal (Cult of Luna) - The Ocean

Progressive/Alternative stuff (Tool) - Indukti

Stoner rock/doom (Acid King) - Spiritual Beggars

A whole load of electronic stuff (Massive Attack) - Zero 7

Raster-noton/glitch electronic art - I'm afraid I'm not familiar with these, the closest I come is Autechre

Ambient (Tim Hecker) - Bluetech

Instrumental stuff (Secret Chiefs) - Panzerballett

Jazz (Miles Davis) - Aziza Mustafa Zadeh

Classical (Rachmaninov) - Messiaen

Folk (Sigur Ros) - Halifax Pier

Hip Hop (Jedi Mind Tricks) - Snowgoons

more mainstream stuff (Bjork) - Editors

haha yeah I was being sloppy with my genre-ing because it was 1AM or something when I punched out that post.

And am aware of the Goldmund/Helios connection, they somehow have a similar vibe, despite being so different.

I also loled at your description of metalheads' taste becoming more 'catholic' hahaha. I was definitely a more militant metalhead, but am glad my ears have opened up to all the weird and wonderful stuff out there.

Great. This is pretty much why I made this thread - to find people with pretty good overlap and get new recommendations/network.

I never got into Nonexist, that type of avant-garde metal never really did it for me. They have cool ideas though.
The Ocean is good, but trumped by the big ones like Intronaut and ISIS for me.
Had not heard of Indukti, they sound very interesting, thanks. You might like Octopus - CODA as they sound somewhat similar.
Snowgoons sounds decent too.

I'm a huge Autechre fan, and I guess you could say they were my gateway (with albums like Untilted) into Raster-noton type stuff. You might like some of their work... Pixel - Display, for example, is a modern electronic masterpiece IMO.

Thanks for the replies, keep em' coming!

I used to be in to a lot of the same stuff you mention but have mellowed out a bit. Some of my favorites now you may classify as progressive are Karnivool, Cire, Mnemic, Rook, Sikth, and for hip-hop I've always been a Tech N9ne fan.

I don't know if this is all too mainstream for you, your list has some pretty obscure stuff on it : )

Post-rock/Post-metal (Lantlos, by far the best band surrounding Alcest)

A whole load of electronic stuff (James Blake (don't go for his S/T cd), Shackleton, Carl Craig, Andy Stott)

Raster-noton/glitch electronic art (Alva Noto + Ryuichi sakamoto + Ensemble Modern, Gridlock, Ricardo Villalobos & Max Loderbauer, Vladislav Delay)

Ambient (Fennesz, Celer, Stars of the lids + spinoffs, Jefre Cantu Ledesma, Mitchell Akiyama)

Jazz (Bill Evans trio, Brad Mehldau, Cannonball Adderley, Charlie Haden, Fire! With Jim 'O rourke, John Zorn / the book of angels CD's, oh and given that you like experimental electronic music: Supersilent)

Classical (Nils Frahm, Kashiwa Daisuke (borders electronic), Ólafur Arnalds, the usual suspects like Reich and Pärt)

Folk (Jenny Hval, Jakob Olausson, Heather Woods Broderick, Ólöf Arnalds)

Hip Hop (Deep puddle dynamics, Cannibal Ox, Obba Supa, Gonjasufi, Madvillain, Atmosphere)

Seems like a normal musical taste to me.

Yeah I used to have your kind of taste, have moved along to other stuff now though! : )

Dude. Dude. hahaha amazing. But by being in Europe you definitely have an advantage in terms of general standards for music :p.

Have heard about 80% of what you've mentioned...the following are new and great though:

Fire! With Jim Orourke is pretty incredible, reminds me of a Bitches Brew vibe. Supersilent is very interesting too, some of the songs I previewed reminded me of the Zorn project Electric Masada.
Jenny Hval is straightforward but pleasing. Jakob Olausson is not something I would normally like, but there is something charming about the off-kilter feel.

Where do you find your music? Do you have a last.fm?

Jan 24, 2012 at 8:05 PM Post #13 of 13
A dutch version of rateyourmusic. Because it is a smaller scale website, it's easier to follow users with a lot of knowledge about certain types of music. Apart from that, last.fm, a couple of music blogs and magazines. I use social media to follow artists or labels that are active on those and I use beatport for techno / dubstep / house releases. http://www.last.fm/user/Ynoskire
