SMSL D400EX & D400ES - Impressions Thread

D400ES owner here, anyone ever had an issue with PCM Filter set to Off causing just horrid distorted sound? I keep it on Min. Phase and it is fine. I was testing out my new A90D and soon as I went filter off... Didn't go well LOL! I know there was a Firmware update not on the official website for the ES, but don't remember if this was supposed to fix it. The firmware update tool from what I could see does not show current version number, instead just a hex.

I downloaded and just installed firmware 1.01 on my D400ES .. so confusing … I was shocked that I was able to update it on the second attempt … found helpful info for installing procedure on the “website we are not to name”

Firmware and update software was downloaded from the link/address I posted a few pages ago in the forum.

I have to test if the update fixed the bad sound coming out when the filters are turned off

Edited: firmware update did not fix horrible sound when no filter is selected

I’ll let you know when I can … need to do a few other home chores right now
Awesome! No rush at all! I have that file downloaded from your link you posted. Did you use the ispv2.4 software to do so? I wasn't sure if the device ID was the same from the PDF included for the 400EX (I know the firmware hex of course is from the 400ES). Looking forward to hear if it helped yours out!

Is anyone using the D400 EX in direct DSD mode with HQPlayer? Please see my post here. I'm having issues with it and could use some tips if you've been successful at it.

There is no such thing as a DAC burn-in in my opinion.

It seems to me that the Do300ex has the exact same DAC as the D400ex.
The official website states "Dual mono design, one AK4499EX per channel, distortion as low as a staggering 0.00006% (-124dB)" which is exactly the same as the D400ex, and the measurements are almost identical (or slightly better).
The number of operational amplifiers used is reduced from 9 to 5, which seems a little different, but I don't think this is the reason for the $500 difference.

seems like it but using fewer dual opamps

It looks like there is going to be a new addition to the D400-series of DACs called the D400 PRO.

https://weibo.com/szsmsl?refer_flag=1005050010_

It's only been shown from the front and no other details are currently known.

Its features, specs and price will be revealed on 9-11-23.

Also just released is a new flagship-level DAC in the VMV line named the D2R which uses ROHM DAC chips. Its MSRP is $999.00.

It looks like the DO300EX has a single AK4499EX chip (like the M400).

Yep, and it looks like a great value for is $469.00 price.

But both the DO300EX and DO400 are integrated DAC/headphone amp designs, while the D400ES, D400EX and the soon-to-be-released D400 PRO are pure DAC-only designs.

If the D400 PRO is the D400EX with a good linear power supply, I'd like to hear it.
Don't know anything about the Rohm DAC chip in the VMW D2R . . .

Update: Here is a link to Rohm's website and the BD34301ekv chip. Optimized for Classical music listening apparently.

More information on that chip. Looks very interesting . . . (I'm listening to Mahler as we speak).
