Greetings!

I will soon be in posession of a sparkling new Schiit Asgard amp for my bedside rig. I plan to use either my iPod Classic for a source, or a CD player.  I have a Discman to use in the interim, but my dream is to find a CD/SACD player that will complement the Asgard footprint.  My space is limited where the rig sits, so I need a CD player that is of similar size or slightly smaller to place on top.

My preference is for a player that has direct AC power, rather than a portable with a wall wart.  Used or vintage gear is not a problem, as long as the sound is good.

Suggestions?  Oh and I would like to stay under $200 if at all possible.  Gotta have a dream.

Thanks in advance.

Thought a quick bump was in order.

After now spending time with my Asgard (a wonderful amp, by the way) I want to keep the hunt alive for suggestions and impressions of potential small sized CD players (SACD if exists) that I can pair with the Asgard.  I know that Pro-ject has its CD Box and Parasound with its zCD, but both seem to be quite deep and may not fit the space I have available.

Searching through old posts brings me to the vintage high end portable option, which would work from a size and hopefully provide an SQ step up from the lowly Sony Discman I am using now.  I know there is more quality to be had from some of the better options in that world.

What has been your experience with the likes of the Sony D-25 or the Denon DCP100/150?  Who has one that they have retired from use and would part with?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

These are the smallest that I know of:

This whole "BOX" concept looks really cool:

Hey! How are things in my home town of Minneapolis?

The TEAC unit looks great, but where can one find it in the US?

I have also tried to find the Pro-Ject CD Box, but no one seems to carry it.  I like the non-SE version.  You are listed in the trade; do you have a source for either?

Thanks!

Surely they must have some kind of distributor network list on their websites?

Searching about, I found that Jerry Raskin's the Needle Doctor carries the Pro-ject Box line, and sent them a note to see what they can do.

We shall see.  In the meantime, I may try to snag a vintage PCDP of a better sort than what I have.  Checking out the usual suspects like the Sony D-25 and such finds their prices up near what I expect the ProJect to cost.  That is unless I get lucky!  I will eventually post a WTB in the classifieds to see if anyone is ready to part with a D25S, which is the one I would most like to have.  Silver to match my Asgard.

Mpls is keeping up with the same old routine - disappointing professional sports franchises and all. The big deal around here lately is the Viking stadium debacle, and me trying to figure out where all the good local music is hiding these days.

I looked around to find a place to purchase the TEAC and the Pro-ject box stuff, but was unable to find anything new. My TEAC distro only has a few low priced pieces and www.needledoctor.com is the only place I found that listed Pro-Ject Box parts (but didn't have the CD players on the site).
My main 2-Channel/Hifi connection is a Musichall dealer, so they don't have Pro-ject either.

You can try emailing the guys at Audio Perfection to see if they have a line on the TEAC player. info@audioperfection.com

It's too bad the US has become such an overwhelming iSociety.

Thanks HFG528,

Although I know that the Pro-ject does not meet the SACD dream, it is of a size that fits well on or under my amp.  Unless there is such a thing as a portable SACD player, which I doubt exists, I will be held to CD only playback.

Watching what some of the better portables are going for on eBay makes me think a little patience may pay off.  Do any HeadFiers in Europe know if there is a retailer that will sell and ship a CD Box to the US? It would need to be the 110v version, of course.

Deep pockets can get you what you want. This is the McIntosh Limited Edition MX-A60.

I suppose that Sony SCD-X501ES which is a mid-sized SACD player with 2 digital outs (only PCM, unfortunately), will suit your needs.

Own the one myself and use it in a second (portable) system together with Perreaux Silhouette SXP-2 passive preamp and SX-60M monoblocks for ProAc Tablette Anniversary speakers at corresponding Atacama stands (obligatory!). Also paired with Perreaux SXH-2 headphone amp and Sony MDR-V600 phones.

Sound is crisp and detailed, yet quite musical and non-fatiguing enough (if take into account the equipment level used) but one should 'play' with interconnect/speaker cords as well as power ones. I use AQ Lapis x3 for interconnects & Siltech FT-12 bi-wire ribbons for speakers. Old XLO 10 at power end but got better results with Ortofon PSC-5500XG cables.
