linn has an entry-level model called the genki, which i have a very fond memory of, albeit without phones or a headmaster handy, and, if i recall correctly, was cheaper than the sugden...
there's also the classik, which, to the best of my understanding, is a genki with an amp and a tuner in a small box, and would probably make a great bed-side friend...
but then again, the mags who reviewed the sugden cdmaster seem to have _loved_ it, so it's probably just a matter of properly breaking it in...

c'mon ian, you know you want a meridian. it's not like everything else out there is bad...it's just that everything else ain't a meridian.
