I've been tossing around the idea of putting together a decent headphone system for work. Basically:

USB -> TOS/SPDIF converter -> DAC -> amp -> headphones

In terms of the DAC it would have to be small and cheap... only thing that comes to mind is a used Audio Alchmey or maybe a Channel Island. I'd get another Cal Audio Sigma II, but those things are way too big.

I've also owned the Art DI/O, too bright.. I prefer my audio more in the mellow/lush zone.

Any other suggestions?

Try M-Audio SuperDAC 2496. Its a nice DAC. I have one and I am very happy with it.

I've got an Entech Number Cruncher 205.3 at work that I like. It's small, but the 203.2 is even smaller.

I would strongly suggest the Entech unit over anything by Audio Alchemy. The AA stuff is fun, but the Entech was designed by the same guy (Peter Madnick), its newer, and can be found cheaper since it lacks the cult following of the AA gear. Two 203.2s just sold on eBay for well under $100.
