I am making a dedicated headphone setup for the first time, and I am on a limited budget (college budget). My phones that I've already purchased are Sennheiser HD-650s.

I want to either go with a Squeezebox v3 or a Apple Airport Express and Spitfire DAC. All in all, I'd rather go for the Squeezebox as I have a v2 and enjoy it a lot. However, if the dedicated DAC in the spitfire was worth it, I would consider it.

Both will be feeding a DIY Pimeta amplifier, and both would have a custom fully regulated power supply made for them (the DAC portion in the spitfire case, at least).

Why do you want to upgrade from your squeezebox v2 to a v3? They are basically exactly the same player just in a different form factor.

You could keep the SBv2 and get a dedicated DAC for it.

Just my two cents
