One thing I've noticed with my 600's/PPA is the sounds I've never heard from tracks I've listened to before..
Tracks on the same CD will be different.. One track will have really boomy percussion, while another will have awesome, crisp, twacking drums.
One track will have a weird sibilence, or echo, or wince-inducing highs, another will not..
So I would definately add your source material to the list of suspects.
BTW, I bought mine used as well..
PS
I had the same problem with my HT speakers once. there was this bad clipping crackle while I was watching Starship Troopers.. Never happened with any other movie.. I thought maybe the volume was too high, or my amps speakers couldn't handle it, etc.. Was really pissing me off. Turns out it was a badly compressed DVD and I wasn't the only one who had this problem with this particular movie
