I'm thinking I would like to have a single earbud to use with my iPod/iPhone while bicycling. Sort of like background music.

I just keep one bud in the ear & the other dangling while I bike. I don't think you need a special headset for riding your bike. Keep the volume at a safe level & you're all good.

Yeah I was looking for a suggestion for a single earbud/maybe mono or a combined stereo.

Im not sure if this same law applies to earbuds, but in my experience with canalphones/IEM's, having just one in tends to sound awful. Are you sure you wouldn't just rather have a set that allows outside noise in?

If you have Rockbox on your iPod, you should be able to set the output to mono. Then you can just wear a normal set of earbuds and dangle one.

I can't think of anything like you're describing though, except maybe mono headsets with one driver and a mic.

How about a set of PX100's or Porta-SportaPro's. Great SQ and the ability to hear outside sounds as necessary. Skip iEM's for what your looking for as their too dangerous for cycling.

Use scissors to cut the unwanted bud off and cap the wires

To get full stereo detail out of one bud, you'd need to create some sort of crossfeed circuit with resistors. Not sure how it would work. You'd need to combine the channels and feed it into one bud.

i am in similar situation but i generally just use both in when im crossing it on trails and never use them when in traffic. i use the at ck10 which seal incredibly well: have no wind noise and are durable and tiny: almost fit inside the flappy part of the ear canal.

used to use um2 and e500 for bicycling then gave up for a bit as i thought it dangerous: it is. but i use only when there is nothing but me, some mud and rocks in the way

to the nice suggestions of px100 etc or other phones that are open: wind noise drives one mad at anything over 15km per hour. if you are a roadie or even mtber, then it is annoying beyond most things.
